I Love My "Ninja"---Orange-winged Amazon

These birds can be a lot of fun. My bird mocks me eating, swallowing, laughing, and talking on the phone. He also talks even more when machinery is going, e.g., a blowdryer. He will sit on the shower door in the bathroom and sing when the blowdryer is on. One hint is it can take a while to bond with a parrot. They tend to have just one favorite person. I inherited my bird after a friend died of cancer. I knew the bird two years before he became my bird and it took a few months for him to warm up to me again, but the wait is worth it. Parrots can be just as loving as dogs. When I come home from work, my parrot greets me with a huge "Hello" and sometimes he says "Hello pretty." Who wouldn't like that?...

My Lilac Crowned Amazon Is My Life!

I have a 5 year old, male lilac crowned amazon who I have had since he was a baby. He is definitely the highlight in my life. He's quite the character at times. I sing a lot, so when I'm singing, you hear him in the background singing along with me. Although, he's not great at staying in tune :] He's definitely a one person bird. The absolute love of my life. However, with all the joys that come along with having him, there are also pains. He costs on average $150 a month in food and toys. He can get snippy and bite. Especially when there are strangers around. I always have to make sure I don't use non-stick pans, hairspray, scented candles, air freshener, or anything to those extents around him. Although, he's worth every penny and every worry. I wouldn't change having him, for the world!

His name is Taz

My Blue Front is named Taz for a reason. He can be a devil, but he is such a delight to have. Very hormonal, but playful, talkative and always a lot of fun. My new website opening soon Http://parrottoysandsupplies.com

good and bad experiences

I have 9 years experience with amazon parrots, it was love at first sight, but I had to learn a lot. When I finally found last year a companion for the 9 years old female yellow cheek - by the way the most affectionate bird - horror started. After a couple of months the male, unfortunately too young yellow crown, became more and more aggressive. He chased her and they fought with each other in the air. Since I didn't want to give away the youngster, the older lady was given to a 50 years old parrot who can't fly. Now everybody is happy. I'm completely devoted to mine. He sings, whistles and talks and flies through the hallway to join me for breakfast. I like that he keeps his distance... Now I have to find a new female for him. Wish me good luck!!

Life in the jungle

I own a Red-Lored Amazon and my husband has an Orange-Winged Amazon, whom we must house separately because of jealousy. Neither bird will tolerate anyone other than his/her respective owner, and while they will talk to each other across the room, we are careful to have only one bird out of the cage at a time. These birds are indeed loud, demanding, destructive, expensive - and completely worth it. I highly recommend Amazons to animal lovers who are prepared to be VERY involved in their pets' lives.

my crazy orange winged amazon

Hello, i have a 2 year old orange wing amazon that my wife and i got when he was only 6 months old. i have read alot about this breed, alot saying they're very loud (he can be but keeps it to a minimum), that you WILL be bitten (so far nothing), for the most part he wont poop on you unless he's off his cage for a crazy long time (as if you went camping and were told you cant pee behind the trees). i think alot of a parrots behavior is to how well they were socialized when they were young. we can pass him around and he will let anyone hold him (never bit anyone yet). We have a dog ,a conure, and two ferrets and EVERYONE gets along.Willie speaks a bunch of words pretty good for only 2 yrs old, whistles a few good tunes, blows kisses at most people (even strangers), and goes nuts when we vacume (loves the vacume!!!)

Owned by a Lilac Crowned Amazon

I have a 16 year old Lilac Crowned Amazon named Willy. He is extremely jealous of others and I am the only one that can handle him without him biting. In fact he has never bit me, but will bite others very quickly. Not good for small children who will stick their fingers in the cage. When small children come over, we put baby gates around the cage so that they cannot get too close to him. Overall, however, he is extremely funny, very talkative, loves to sing, and loves to just sit around outside the cage. We have one cat and one dog - all of them tolerate each other. In fact, the bird will yell "Come here!" to the dog and call him over to his cage. Willy is a great addition to the home and adds a lot of entertainment. :)

stitchesbaj

I am owned by a very chatty African Gray male named 'Angel' and a lovely girl Mexican Red-headed Amazon by the name of 'Lucy' and I wouldn't trade them for the world! They are my beat friends; but, when the male gets jealous of my husband or if I pay too much attention to another pet (dog, cat, bird), that's when he lets me know he isn't pleased. So, I've learned to stay away from him about a day so he 'forgets' and then I try to befriend him again. The female is very lay back and speaks about 3 words - loves her treats and snuggles alot.

owned by 2 amazons

I totally agree with Lynne in NYC. I have 2 blue fronted amazons (brother & sister) since they were 8 months old. They are now 29 years old. They are both potty trained. The female sings opera (such a beautiful voice she has) They love to sit on the couch and watch TV shows with lots of noise - "Let's Make a Deal", "Price is Right", "American Idol" - they laugh at everything funny. They like to take a nap everyday around 2:30pm(about 2 hours) They go to bed @ 9:00pm and wake up around 10:00am. They are my best buddies.

Being owned by an amazon

If you don't: Like to vacuum and clean stay at home a lot enjoy a lot of noise enjoy excitement Have a fair amount of extra space in your house live in an apartment have an extra $100/month An Amazon parrot may NOT be for you. They are MESSY, NOISY, and EXPENSIVE. They are also endlessly entertaining, and when properly socialize they are wonderful companions. Be warned... they BITE, and if you own a parrot, you will be bitten! All that said, I am owned by a Beautiful big Yellow Naped amazon, and he is my best buddy.
