It Depends On A Bird's Personality

I got a pair of baby parakeets less than a week ago. The male is really sweet and is already learning to "Step-Up". The female is kinda mean and pecks and bites alot. It really depends on a bird's personality! I can't even get the female to look at me. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you get a bird (or any kind of pet). It can be alot of work and constant training. It will be worth it eventually though.

What It's Really Like to Own a Pet Bird

I have been owned by 2 African greys, 1 Lovebird, & 1 Cockatiel for 12 years now. I wish I was told what I'm going to tell you. Owning a bird requires an investment of resources: time, social, financial, & environmental. Think about what your expectations are. Research the costs of annual vet exams & tests, food, toys, cleaners, & all other living expenses. Determine who will care for your bird if you go away for a weekend - boarding is expensive & most places require proof of annual exam. Birds live longer than other pets (some up to 80 yrs) & owning them is like living with toddlers that never grow up. They depend on you for everything but still have a mind of their own & will test you. Unlike other pets, birds have not been domesticated so all inherent behavioral & physical needs remain intact such as: chewing & shredding, squawking, dropping & discarding food, flocking, etc. A bird can love you unconditionally but for both of you to benefit, you must be able to reciprocate.

Messy! I love my birds but find it hard to deal with the the constant clean up. I have had them for 10 years. If I were to do it again, I would keep only one bird.

Owning a bird

I have 5 birds ranging from 1yr to 9. The first bird I acquired was a dwarf parrot that was called a grey cheeked parokeet. she was such a sweet loving baby, she called to me by saying her name, Emmie Jay, short for Emerald Jade, and I love you. She passed away after 8 yrs due to an accident, but I loved her like a child, and mourned for her in the same way. She would act as if she would wrap her arms around me whenever I came in. My next bird that means so very much to me is an African Grey named Pepper. Named for her colors. She talks, and mimics my phone conversations. I bought more for my kids. Sunshine, a cockateil; Raven, a black-headed senegal that seems to adopted my husband; an amazon named Highway; and a peach colored parokeet named Tiki. They are very sweet, cuddly, funny, and vocal every morning. It is a blessing that occasionally gets pretty loud, but still extremely worth every song, scream or word!

All Bird Species Are Different!

I love birds. Spring is my favorite season, in part, because of birds. I love having them in my home. They are beautiful and pleasant to listen to. However, please do your research PRIOR to buying one. There are many different species, some like to be handled and can be tamed whilst others would do better without being handled and left in the cage with a friend. If you do a simple sweep daily with your other basic daily house tidying, it's not that bad at all.

My mom has a umberlla cockatoo and it LOVES her... She bought it yesterday and it barks like a dog, says I love you, hi, hello Ocea. The bad part about it is we dont know if it is a boy or girl.... Ocea is very unique and I have never seen such a graceful animal except it...

crazy parakeet

Well, it is day 2 of owning my parakeet. He is absolutely crazy! Spits seeds, runs up and down his perches and "cries" if I even go to the bathroom and he cant see me. I let him fly around the washroom last night, what a mistake that was. He doesnt have his wings clipped/trimmed or whatever you call it, I had to climb halfway up my shower wall to get him! Hoping this gets easier and stays as fun.

My Bird Jasper

I love Jasper to death. She is a wonderful bird. She knows when I'm sad and when I go to sleep she preens me and stays on my back the whole night. I would like to say that we have a very strong bond but it could always be stronger -- she always stays with me and she hates it when I avoid her; she goes crazy. She is a parakeet and has a great personality. I would not giver her up for the world! I love her, she is my best friend, I can tell her anything. She is my first bird and she is very smart. Whenever she sees me eat dinner, she will get on my plate and eat with me (all the food is suitable.) She is great!

fun but expensive

I have a female ringneck parrot, a green cheek conure, blackmask lovebird and a parakeet. Recently I adopted a kitten from spca after having no choice of putting my other cat down! My kitten brought fleas in my home! I returned the kitten to spca since not only the fleas but he had a few health issues! I have put my birds through moving in boarding twice now since I have had to bomb my house to rid of the flea infestation the kitten brought in! Luckily my birds do not have fleas but it has been very costly to board them and I hope the fleas will be gone now that I no longer have the kitten! Take it from me be very cautious when deciding on a cat or dog when having birds! I definatly chose my birds over keeping the kitten! They have been part of my life for over 2 years!

I love my Amazon Parrot!

My best thing I ever did was to get my Amazon Parrot, Samantha. She is happy, sweet and smart. She will be with me forever! She says"I love you!", if I have a good day or a bad day an even laughs with me! She goes to sleep happy and wakes up with a "Hello!" enert morning. What more could I ask for!

what its really like to own a pet bird!

Firstly: READ! READ!! READ!!! U will learn which type is right for u & ur home (& neighbours!) I visited pet shoppes for a certain species, (for years) then asked specific questions, read a lot more, about this type of bird, and eventually handled a few. Eventually, this one special bird & i locked! I made purchase, & weaned her myself, & hand-fed her. Cockatoos go thru alot of changes during their lifespan, & expect it! She is the greatest companion I ever had! We even sleep together, every nite. Make no mistake, it takes great patience, & always keeping up w/her needs, & new info, as she grows! Do NOT expect cockatoo to remain SWEET, as when she was a baby! (They are really SMART, & completely read YOU!) They are also escape artists, & they DO speak, & at the appropiate times too! They are fun, so affectionate, & loyal critters. They are total hams, & love company, but will also liike it best when guests leave too! They are exactly likewise to some people, and children. Bites too! ;-)

Lovable birds

I have an African Grey, 2 budgies, and 2 lovebirds. The budgies and the lovebirds are caged all the the time, but a joy to watch because they are so smart. The Grey spends her time out of the cage 24/7. She goes in by herself when she wants to sleep. She is a great talker. She does not like my husband. I also have a cat and Nikki calls Boots (cat) all day long. All in all I enjoy my birds and they are part of the family. When I come into the dining room in the morning, Nikki calls Guten Morgen (German), then she says, "How are you doing this morning?" Or when something falls on the floor, she asks, "What happened?" She truly is a character, but I love my birds. I feed them only organic MASH in the morning and pellets for the rest of the day. They have never been sick.

Laughter in sad times

I have 3 blue crown conures and 3 sun conures. They have been the joy of my life while going thru a bad situation. I am in constant pain fron numerous health problems. I would have just given up several times had it not been for time and love I recieved from my birds. They all have a large vocabulary and would keep me laughing when I really needed to cry. They call me Big Mama and always know how to show their love and affection to make my life worth living. If you are looking for a best friend and companion who will never let you down, then our feathered friends may be just the right kind of pet for you. Just be ready for a lot of cleaning and chewing up things, but it will all be worth it for the results you receive from it. I will never be without my fids!
