Definition: The term "variable reinforcement" is used when discussing training pet birds and other types of animals. When a trainer is using variable reinforcement, they are using different varieties of a positive stimulus to reward the animal being trained for a job well done. For example, when training pet birds, it is common practice to use food as a reward to show the bird that they are performing correctly. One can imagine, however, that an animal as smart as a bird could quickly grow tired of working for the same reward every time. Using variable reinforcement, a trainer can keep a bird motivated to work for a reward as the bird will not be able to predict what they might get in return for performing.

For instance, if you are training a bird with bits of apple, you might randomly reward the bird with a sunflower seed at various times during the training session. Other times, you might throw in a bite of banana or a small piece of millet. This will serve to keep the bird engaged and happy during training, and also helps to make sure that the bird will perform for you more willingly.

Variable reinforcement has been used as a positive training technique with many species of animals, and continues to be practiced by top trainers around the world today. Try it with your bird during your next training session -- chances are, you'll notice a big difference in your bird's willingness to learn!
