Common Names:

Blue Crown Conure, Blue Crowned Conure, Sharp Tailed Conure

Scientific Name:

Aratinga acuticaudata.

Origin:

Blue Crown Conures are found in various parts of central South America.

Size:

Most Blue Crown Conures grow to be about 12 inches long from the beak to the tip of the tailfeathers.

Average Lifespan:

Captive Blue Crown Conures can live for up to 30 years when well cared for.

Temperament:

Blue Crowns are known for being gentle, intelligent, and playful birds. They are very active, energetic birds, so plenty of mental stimulation and exercise is necessary to help prevent destructive behaviors.

Colors:

Blue Crown Conures are mostly a deep green color, with reddish tips on the tailfeathers and the characteristic bright blue feathers on their heads and faces. They have horn colored beaks and white eye rings.

Feeding:

Blue Crown Conures in the wild normally feast on a varied diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, berries, and grain. Feeding an equally varied diet consisting of fresh foods and high quality pellets will ensure that pet conures receive adequate nutrition.

Exercise:

Exercise is important to Blue Crown Conures as they are a naturally high energy species. Pet Blue Crowns should be allowed a minimum of 2 hours outside of their cage per day so that they can exercise and play. Plenty of toys should also be provided as these birds love to chew, and will need to exercise the muscles in their jaws.

Blue Crown Conures as Pets:

Until the release of the movie "Paulie", which featured a Blue Crown Conure, this species was one of the best kept secrets in aviculture.

Gentle, beautiful, and intelligent, Blue Crown Conures now grace the homes of many a bird lover. They are very social birds, bonding strongly to their owners. They are also known to be gifted talkers, capable of learning several words and short phrases.

While Blue Crowns have a reputation for being one of the more quiet conure species, they do have the ability to scream and screech, and can be quite vocal upon waking and before bedtime. For this reason, most are not considered good birds for apartment living.

If you are interested in adopting a Blue Crown Conure, the best thing to do is contact a good local breeder and set up an appointment to meet the available birds. Spending time with a few different birds before choosing a pet will help you pick the one that is the best fit for your personality and lifestyle.
