Should I Get a Second Bird?

By Alyson Burgess, About.com

Question: Should I Get a Second Bird?

I sometimes feel like I don't have enough time to spend with my bird. Should I get another bird to keep him company, so he doesn't get too lonely?

Answer: If the bird that you have is tame and bonded to you, then getting another bird runs the risk of doing more harm than good. In fact, depending on the situation, it could put your relationship with your pet in serious jeopardy.

Birds operate with a flock mentality, and they form strong bonds with those that are part of that "flock". All too often, when birds that are bonded to their owners have other birds introduced to their "flock", they will forget about their human friends and bond to the new birds.

If your only reason for considering a second bird is to provide a playmate for your pet, there are several other options available for providing entertainment when you can't be with your feathered friend. Try leaving a radio playing softly in your bird's room, making some exciting new toys, or even positioning your pet's cage so that he can watch TV when you aren't at home. All of these can help provide the mental stimulation your pet needs without putting your relationship at risk.

Before bringing a new bird home on impulse, thoroughly think your decision through and assess the bond that you have with your existing bird. If you feel like to don't have enough time to spend with the bird that you've already got, then chances are that you won't have any extra time to spend with a second one. Taking a few moments to make an informed decision will help ensure that you do what is best for yourself, your bird, and your family.
