"Bird of the Week" Submission Guidelines

By , About.com Guide

Jennifer Lynn the Orange Winged Amazon, who was chosen as the very first Bird of the Week.

Chuck Dallas
Each week, I choose one special bird from hundreds of reader submissions to feature on the front page of the site. Known as the "Bird of the Week" feature, it has provided me a great opportunity to get to know readers and their birds since it began.

If you would like to submit your bird to be "Bird of the Week", then follow the guidelines listed below to send me some photos and information on your pet. You never know, your bird just might be chosen as next week's star!

  • All photos must be clear, well lit, and in color. Photos that are blurry, out of focus, too dim, or too bright cannot be considered for the "Bird of the Week" feature.

  • Photos should be a minimum of 200px in size. Photos that are too small cannot be used, as enlarging them distorts the image and lowers the quality of the photo immensely.

  • Make sure that your photos are in .JPG format. Photos in any other format cannot be considered for use in the feature.

  • Photos should be of the bird only.Photos containing images of people or other pets cannot be used.

  • Pictures of birds in unsafe situations will NOT be used. Please don't risk your bird's health and safety to stage a shot to submit for the feature. Such images will be immediately disqualified.

  • Submit ample information about your pet. Along with your photos, be sure to send plenty of information about your pet. Such information would include the bird's name, age and sex if known, favorite toys, foods, and perches, special talents, and information on the bird's daily routine. Don't forget to include information on how you got the bird, where he or she came from, and any special needs the bird might have.
Once you've gathered your photos and information, you can submit it to me by emailing me at birds.guide@about.com. Please keep in mind that there is no way I can personally respond to every submission, but if your bird is chosen I will notify you by email when the feature is published.

Good luck, and I look forward to meeting all of your birds!
