Quaker Parrots
Saturday October 25, 2008
Known for their charming, comical personalities and their willingness to learn human speech, the Quaker Parrot is an excellent choice for those who want all the fun of a large parrot in a smaller package. They adapt well to living in a "human flock" setting, and enjoy spending time with their owners. To learn more about keeping Quakers as pets, check out my article on Keeping Quaker Parrots. And don't forget to send in a photo if you do add a new Quaker to your family!

I have a quaker parrot named Mickey. He’s a talker and can even sing. Sometimes he blends the words of both songs and creates his own version of Row, Row Your Boat and the duck verse of Old MacDonald’s Farm. I don’t have a lot of pictures of him. But, still, there’s several. He’s a handsome bird, or as he says it, “Mickey Pretty Boy!”
I have a quaker named Yazhi (Navajo for “my little one”) and he is the best thing that ever happened to me..He’s very messy, very loud, but we have so much fun together! And his talking is so great!
We got a Quaker in August; she is about 6 months old now. When do they start to imitate ‘people talk’? Our Neeka does a great wolf-whistle, imitates our snoring sounds PERFECTLY(she does it when she feels contented!), imitates all our little clicking and lip smacking noises we make to her, but she has yet to say a single ‘human’ word…I hear her quietly ‘practicing’ lots of sounds, but no human words yet…is she still too young to say words? Or is there something we can do differently to get her to learn words instead of noises?
Thanks
p.s by the way, we absolutely LOVE her - even if she never says a word - she is the greatest AND the bossiest little thing I’ve ever seen, and she has all 5 of our cats under her thumb, er, claw! Ounce for ounce, she is the bravest little girl I’ve ever known! Best pet we’ve ever gotten (except for our Oriental cat - he has a special place in my heart - but don’t tell the other cats that!)
