Pionus Parrots as Pets

One of my personal favorite pet bird species is one that is often overlooked -- the Pionus Parrots. These gorgeous little small to midsized birds are colorful, intelligent, affectionate, but above all, very quiet. In fact, the generally quiet nature of these parrots have made them favorites among bird owners who live in apartments and condominiums. If you think you'd be interested in adding a Pionus to your family, check out this great article on Pionus Parrots from Pionusparrot.com. The article is full of information on living with pet Pionus, and provides details on several of the more popular sub-species complete with breathtaking photos.

Hi there-we have just bought a white capped Pionus and he/she is the most wonderful bird-an amazingly affectionate nature. Today I noticed that the feces were quite runny and frothy in the centre which is a worry. I live in Cape Town and there is no avian vet in this city-can you advise what I should do? he pi fluffs up from time to time and also sneezes occasionally.
The pi’s diet at present is a nutritious pellet mix plus seeds and dried fruit.
She also drinks a lot of water.
The only fresh food the bird has adapted to at the moment: carrot tops and fresh apples. I have tried papaya, grapes, strawberries but no interest has been shown yet. I am going to get swiss chard and a host of other veggies to try today.
I hope you can advise me-thanks for your time.
PS- I hope you sorted your mouse problem!

I think your bird needs a vet. He sounds sick, and pet birds can die rather quickly when they’re sick. Please find a vet and take him!
