W.H.O. Confirms Human Bird Flu Transmission
Friday June 23, 2006
The World Health Organization has released an update confirming the first proven case of H5N1 avian influenza transmitted from human to human. The case occured within a family from Indonesia, and resulted in the death of persons that had no contact with infected birds -- only with infected people. According to scientists, this indicates that the H5N1 strain of the virus is now capable of mutating to a state in which wide scale human to human transmission is becoming a likely threat. Although the H5N1 virus has yet to reach American borders, experts say that it will eventually reach the U.S. as infected migratory species follow their normal flight patterns. What does this mean to bird owners? It may mean changing certain routines in order to limit the risk of exposure. Read over these Avian Flu Facts for tips and information on how to keep your pets and your family safe from avian influenza.
