Is Your Bird a Healthy Weight?

Saturday May 20, 2006
As people, we are constantly reminded that we need to watch what we eat and keep an eye on our weight. Bird owners should understand that this is an important issue for our feathered friends as well! Birds that are even slightly overweight or underweight could be susceptible to serious health problems. To make sure that your companion's little body is in top shape, check out these great tips on Assessing a Body Condition in Pet Birds from Exotic Pets Guide Lianne McLeod.

Hi Alyson, again,

I mentioned in a post about a caged birds article, that I have e very social LORY.

She is also a very exploratory eater.

In her native habitat nectar and pollens are her main, or only diet. I did try that for a couple of years, but she was also a very public bird, ande entertainer/ambassador of sorts at a themed attraction.
I am able to hold her and sense that she weighs enough though never actually had her “scaled”
Her diet now, totally abstract for a Lory especially, is Frozen corn as the staple, NO canned or cooked, by her choice???
She will experiment with everything, and reject what doesn’t suit her, but I’ll list her diet choices, though I’m not certain she does more than “Taste”

French Fries
various fruit, even mild citrus
Rasins
Most types of meat
Eggs
Cheese
Breads
Nacho chips

She is also not prone to drinking water, though bathes daily and gets water from the frozen corn.

She seems healthy, is extremely active, and is now at approximately 12 years of age.

Just curious if anyone else has had this experience.
An aside. I was advised that her diet choices, within reason, are ok, and in fact do keep her stool from being as messy as what is usual for a Lory.

Great column. happy to be included.

Rev. Steven
