Pet Bird Insurance

Tuesday May 16, 2006
With rising costs for veterinary care, many pet owners are now turning to pet insurance policies for peace of mind in times of emergency. While many pet insurance companies focus on covering cats and dogs, there are a handful that offer quite comprehensive pet bird policies. One such company is VPI, who provides veterinary coverage for cats, dogs, birds, exotics, and even reptiles! The VPI website offers quite a bit of information on the benefits of purchasing coverage for your pet, details on the different plans that are available, and a list of common myths about pet health insurance. If you are wondering whether or not a pet insurance policy is right for your bird, VPI is a good place to start your research.

The ad states VPI will cover exotic birds and reptiles besides dogs and cats, but when I go to their website, there are only options for insuring dogs and cats. I have a macaw I was looking to insure. Here in the U.S. it seems tough to find a company who covers birds.

In response to #2. I thought so too. But I clicked the quote button and from there you can choose birds.

I just checked out VPI for a quote on a Macaw. Despite the multiple bird discount, it is out of my price range. I wish there was another provider!

VPI will not cover a bird over a certain age. We have a large Umbrella who is 16 years old. They can live to be 80 years old. He is considered an old bird by VPI. If they cover exotic animals they should know what is old and what is not.

I agree with James Kruse #6. I sent them an e-mail telling them that i wouldn’t pay for their insurance because of their ignorance in regards to exotics. I have a Congo African Grey, Goffin’s Cockatoo, and a Jenday Conure. My Conure is 9 and my Cockatoo is 8. They’re not even close to being past their prime yet VPI with only insure them for a short period of time until their 10. That is outrageous and very ignorant on their part. I can understand why they do that for dogs and cats; they don’t have such a long life span as some birds do. My African Grey is just a baby (6 months old) but once she’s 10 they’ll drop her too!

Hi all, I just called petinsurance.com for my 10 year old blue & gold macaw Lucky, and they gave me a quote of $255/yr. but that covers $181 in reimbursements of annual exams (1 beak/nail/feathers trim, 1 cvc, 1 fecal exam, etc.). Since we have all of his tests done annually, it basically “nets out” to an annual cost of about $70. Also, there is a $50 deductible for each incident and covers up to $7,000/yr. in vet bills.

VPI definately has bird insurance. I called them to see about getting my macaw insured. On their website, click the bird plan under “our policies”, then choose “benefit schedule” from the menu on the right, it will give you a detailed list of what they cover.

I just called VPI for a quote for coverage for my rescued cockatiel, who the vet estimates is about 4 years old. VPI says they do cover birds older than 20 years, it’s just that their “quote tool” only goes from 0 – 20 years. But once your bird is enrolled, it can stay enrolled for life, regardless of how long it lives, as long as you keep paying the premiums. In my bird’s case, the quote for medical (not including well-care, which is extra) was $12 a month, and that covers up to $7,000 dollars a year of acccident/illness/disease fees that qualify under their benefit schedule. The benefit schedule is available on their site. I’m still going to shop around first. And oh – I have to wait until I have “owned” the bird for at least 60 days before I can enroll her. Seems reasonable enough.

I called VPI for a quote to have my quaker parrot insured. The quote was $23.25/month including the yearly check up for up to $181. There is a one time first visit deductable for each incident of $50, and they cover up to $7000 per policy term. They said that i should have the quaker for 3months before I can get the insurance. Hopefully this will be helpful.
